Professor Harrie Vredenburg is a leading scholar of innovation, sustainability and economics in the global energy industry and holds the Suncor Chair in Strategy and Sustainability at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. He also holds appointments as a Research Fellow at the University’s School of Public Policy and as an International Research Fellow at Oxford University’s Said Business School in the UK. He previously taught at McGill University in Montreal.

Dr Vredenburg was founder and Academic Director of both the MSc in Sustainable Energy Development (10 years) and of the Global Energy Executive MBA (8 years) programs at the University of Calgary. A popular teacher, he lectures in MBA, Executive MBA, MSc, MPP, doctoral, executive development and corporate directors programs and has several times won the MBA Society Top MBA Teacher Award.

He has authored or coauthored more than 50 papers in international journals including Energy Policy, Energies, Technovation, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, MIT Sloan Management Review, Harvard Business Review and International Journal of Economics & Business Research. He has coauthored government reports on regulation, innovation and on nuclear energy. According to Google Scholar, his publications have been cited in the academic literature more than 8,000 times.

Dr Vredenburg was founding Board Chairman of energy storage startup TERIC Power for 7 years until it was acquired by Idea Well Capital Partners’ Climate Tech Private Equity Fund in 2022. He has also been a non-executive member of the boards of directors of several publicly-traded and private international energy companies for 15 years. There he has championed greenhouse gas emissions reduction initiatives and social and governance initiatives which have proven successful.

Born in the Netherlands, Dr Vredenburg holds both Netherlands (EU) and Canadian nationalities.
